Bully Basics: Activity & Exercise

English Bulldogs are a fun and active breed, but it's important to keep in mind some dos and don'ts for their activities. While they can have bursts of energy and be rough playmates, they are also prone to overheating and respiratory issues. It's important to avoid long walks in hot weather.

The "Dos and Don'ts" of bulldog exercise and activities.

We generally avoid long walks for our English Bulldogs. Our young girls can handle a 30-minute walk without any issues in temperatures of 75 degrees Fahrenheit or cooler.

Here are some dos and don'ts for English Bulldog activities:

Dos:

  • Short walks and moderate exercise, especially in cooler weather
  • Engaging in low-impact activities like swimming or fetch
  • Mental stimulation through puzzle toys or training exercises
  • Socialization with other dogs and people, if your Bulldog enjoys it
  • Consistent exercise routine to maintain a healthy weight and prevent joint issues

Don'ts:

  • Overexertion or strenuous exercise, especially in hot weather
  • Jumping or other high-impact activities that can harm their joints
  • Running on hard surfaces, such as concrete or asphalt
  • Rough play or activities that may lead to injury
  • Ignoring signs of fatigue or discomfort during exercise

Heat exhaustion:

Heat exhaustion is a serious issue for English Bulldogs due to their short snouts and limited ability to regulate body temperature. If you suspect your Bulldog is experiencing heat exhaustion, move them to a cool, shady area and provide them with water. You can also use a cool damp towel on their belly to help lower their body temperature. If their condition does not improve, seek veterinary attention immediately. To prevent heat exhaustion, avoid strenuous activities during hot weather, provide plenty of fresh water, and keep your Bulldog indoors in air conditioning during the hottest part of the day.

**Personal note:
Years ago, one of my older male Bulldogs experienced respiratory distress due to a combination of allergy attack, hotter temperatures, and excitement, resulting in a costly overnight veterinary emergency visit. It's important to prioritize common sense and caution in such situations. If your Bulldog is panting uncontrollably for an extended period of time, it's crucial not to ignore it and seek immediate veterinary attention.

It's not all doom and gloom:

English Bulldogs are known for their fun-loving and active personalities. They may have bursts of energy and are generally very rough and tumble when playing. They thrive on interaction with their owners and love a good game of tug-of-war or fetch. Regular exercise and playtime can help keep your Bulldog healthy and happy, but always be mindful of their limitations.

Here are some Toy suggestions we found that our clan loves!!

**NOTE: Bulldogs are aggressive chewers and have powerful jaws. Never give them anything that will break apart/rip apart easily. For example plush squeaky toys are a no no. Also, Green chews and Raw Hide are a bad idea.
